Welcome Fall...

The one red leaf, the last of its clan,
That dances as often as dance it can,
Hanging so light, and hanging so high,
On the topmost twig that looks up at the sky.

The weather is getting cooler, the wind is blowing and the leaves are changing colors. This is one of my favorite times of the year.  And of course it's a great time to change colors in the house and start decorating.
I love using burlap, wicker baskets and natural colors.  Along with chipped paint and old picture frames.

I thought I would start decorating with my front door. Here's a bit of inspiration I found in blog-world. I'm trying to decide if I want to decorate with the fall colors or with Halloween in mind.

I love this simple wreath.
But then I also love this front porch with the pumpkins and mums...

Or how about a leaf garland and the pumpkins on the urns.  I need to put house numbers on my door!

I also love the beach.  It's my favorite decorating style.  I always try to have a little bit of the beach in every room.  I instantly fell in love with this wreath from Starfish Cottage.  It has the colors and textures of the ocean...

{Friday Finds}

Here's what I found today while searching blogs for some great Fall ideas and projects.  Inspiration is everywhere.  I start at one blog, then it takes me to another blog, then another....and the next thing I know the day is gone.  I've spent my whole day looking at great bloggers and their wonderful ideas.

Oh well...the laundry can wait.

Check out this great fall mantel at 3 Meadow Lake Cottage ...

I love the FALL sign made of tea stained cardstock and cutout letters.  I need to make this.

Then I headed over to Less-than-Perfect Life of Bliss ...

She made this faux Roman shade out of a drop cloth and freezer paper stencil.  You can read her blog for the directions.

Next, I found {show & tell } while watching the Nate Berkus show today.

Look at this cool coffee table made out of doors.  Bloggers are so talented.  Also check out her house on House Proud on Nate's blog.

And then I headed over to A Sort of Fairytale where she shared her pictures of the Country Living Fair in Columbus, Ohio last weekend.

                                        { A Sort of Fairytale }

                              { A Sort of Fairytale }

I was lucky enough to go with my family.  My wonderful husband and son tagged along with me and my daughter as we walked quickly from booth to booth.  There was so much to see!

 And people to meet...

Shaye got to meet Cari from HGTV's Cash and Cari.  She was very sweet to Shaye and asked her all kinds of questions.  I loved her RePurpose booth. It was a fun day...at least for the girls.  {My husband had his phone to check the football scores and I bought a wooden yo-yo for Brayden to entertain himself with.}

Well I hope you find some great Friday inspiration and you can always catch up on laundry on the weekends, if you end up on the computer all day { that's what I tell myself }.

Happy first day of Fall!

This is not my dining room...
But I wish it was.

I love the bench with all the pillows, the wall color, and the covered chairs.
Ohh, so many ideas...
My kids started school today,
so I am ready to tackle some home projects while they are doing some homework.

8.22.2011

I love these pillows...

I can see them in my livingroom, or maybe in my home office, or maybe in the diningroom.  Oh, so many possibilities.  I found a tutorial for Martha Stewart's new line of paints at Tatertots and Jello. I think I need to head over to my local craft store.  Run...don't walk!!!

I want to be here....

I heart coupons!

I have completely changed the way I shop since learning about coupon shopping. I had no idea how much money I could have been saving all these years. I am still learning how to get the best deals, when to buy and when to stock up, and where to get coupons. But there are so many websites and bloggers to help. It takes some time and a little extra effort, but well worth it in savings.

Here is what I purchased today...
I shopped at my local CVS, today is the last day for these items on sale.

Edge shave gel $2.49
use .55 coupon
Pay $1.94

(2 ) Skintimate shave creams $2.49 each
Use 2 $1/1 coupon
Pay $1.49 ea

(2) Schick slim st3 disposable razors $8.49 each
Use B1G1 free coupon
And use $1/1 coupon
Pay $16.98, -$9.49 in coupons, = $7.49 total

If you spend $20 in schick items, you get $10 extra bucks.
So my total came out to...
$24.45
-12.04 coupons
My total came out to $12.41
I used $7.99 extra bucks (from last weeks purchase).
So my out of pocket total was $4.42 + $1.59 tax = $6.01

But I also received $10 extra bucks for transaction #2.
I figured it out to be $12.41 plus $1.59 tax,
minus $10 extra bucks,
= $4 for 5 items or .80 cents each.

#2...
(2) Crest pro health toothpaste $2.99 each
Use(2) .75/1 coupon
Get $2 extra bucks
Pay $2.24, rcv $2EB,
(Total= .24cents each)

U by Kotex tampons $3.49
Use $1/1 coupon
Get $2 extra bucks
Pay $2.49, rcv $2EB
(Total= .49cents)

Bengay $5.99
Use $3/1 coupon
Get $2 extra bucks
Pay $2.99, rcv $2EB
(Total = .99 cents)

My final total = $15.46
minus coupons. - 5.50
Out of pocket total = $9.96
I used my $10 extra bucks from transaction #1 and only paid for $1.01 for tax.
Plus I received $8 in extra bucks to use next week!

I'm sorry I can't tell you the source of the coupon. Once I cut them out, I don't know the paper and date it came from. And I did use my extra bucks from a previous shopping.  I like to save my extra bucks to use for the next week. I find it's just easier on me that way, rather than splitting up my purchases into smaller transactions and using them right away.

If you want to find out  where I get great tips for CVS shopping, go to The Krazy Coupon Lady . There's tons of information on what coupon to use, where it came from and what is a hot deal. There are also tips and the coupon lingo.

Hope that helps and enjoy looking for the bargains!

Extreme vs. Realistic

Have you seen it???

TLC's show called Extreme Couponing.  It has started a trend of coupon-ers in my neighborhood.  I see everyone carrying coupons in binders, envelopes and filers. The shelves are empty on hot coupon items. It has changed the way they shop, and the way stores have changed their coupon policy.

I have to admit...I am one of those mom's armed with my coupons.  I am a beginner!  I have tried, many times, to use coupons.  Normally they  just sit in my coupon organizer until they expire.

After watching the show, I realized I have to stop buying things as I needed them and most importantly...I needed to stop paying full price for ALL my items!  I never took into account how much money I was spending.  I never knew you could get items for free, more importantly lower the cost of my shopping.

I know they call it "extreme" couponing for a reason.  I think 100 bottles of mustard, 150 bottles of pain medication and 40 cases of soda is extreme.  I know many of them donate these items.  But for me, I would like to be a more realistic shopper and try to save money for my family.  I have seen the debates online.  Extreme vs. Realistic.  Don't get those mom's angry...they will let you know their opinion.

You can arm yourself with more knowledge than you need.  There are so many sites available to learn how to shop this way.  I have found a few I like to use.  They're easy to use, perfect for me.

One of my favorite sites is Coupon Mom.

I can go directly to my favorite stores in my area and print out a list of all the items I want to get.  I email the list to myself so I have it in my phone if I forget it.  I also like how she organizes her coupons.

I also like The Krazy Coupon Lady.

Just the name made me want to learn more from her.  I created my coupon binder by copying her pages and organizing them in a 3-ring binder.

I just started using Couponing 101.

Couponing101.com

It gives a lot of  tips and a more realistic approach to shopping. I like having a direct link to the item also.

Don't stop there though.  The information is everywhere. Probably the best way to learn is to go with someone who has been doing this awhile.  This for me is my sister.  She has 5 kids and has been shopping this way for years.  Now, she did have a problem with the Target manager about how she could not use more than 1 coupon for an item when I went shopping with her.  Because she has been shopping this way over 10+ years and has been able to use a buy one, get one free and another manufacturers coupon as far as she can remember.  Now she was told by Target, she could not do it this way.  She wasn't happy!   Because of the show, stores are changing their policies.  Don't forget to read them or even better print them out and bring them with you.  Although they can still interpret them the way they want.

I am now armed with some knowledge, my coupons, sometimes my sister and my list.  I'm going to give it a try and see how much I can save.  I have already saved but it has been time consuming.  I would like to save some money for a trip...maybe California, my nephew is getting married in August...maybe Scotland, my 20th anniversary is coming up.  Can I do it?  Will I be realistic?  Or will I get caught up and go extreme and buy 150 packs of gum?   I do love chewing gum.

To be continued....

Have you seen my little girl???

She's all grown up.
Gone are her cute chubby cheeks and her peach fuzz hair.
Her squeaky voice and little "bob" haircut.
My little girl will be turning twelve this month.
Oh...the tween years!

No longer is she little.
She can look me in the eyes and soon will be taller than me.
She cooks better than me already.
She takes care of her older brother.
She is responsible.
She is caring.
She is no linger a little girl!

She is now a ballerina...a dancer.
She moves with grace.
She twirls and leaps everywhere.
She moves with the music.

She is no longer my little girl...
but a beautiful young lady.

This is my daughter at her first dance competition in Columbus Ohio.
She is in two ballet routines.
This one is called "Stars & Stripes".

She was very excited and nervous before the competition.
She did very well and she took home two awards.

I love to watch her dance...
and I am looking forward to her next competition.

But I no longer look for that little girl on stage...
I see a beautiful daughter growing up!

Keeping it Real...

It's time to get real about....
ughh, I hate to say it, about losing or more like gaining weight.  I have spent the last year and a half in limbo, an exercise coma, denial, procrastinating to myself, all of the above!  And then one day I wake up and say, "what happened to me"?

My story begins a few years back...when my daughter started first grade.  I have all this free time and find myself for once being alone.  I had no idea what to do.  I could only take cleaning and laundry for a couple of hours and then I would call my sister to go shopping.  I hated trying on clothes, nothing fit right.  So one day I realize, I had gained a lot of weight while taking care of my kids.  I was so busy taking care of them that I forget to take care of myself.  I had no idea that not only was I at my heaviest weight, I didn't feel good either.  My blood pressure was dangerously high.  I cried!  Reality stinks!

The next day I joined a weight loss center.  The best choice for me.  I knew I could not do it alone.  I needed to be accountable to someone, other than myself.  I needed a motivator, a supporter and the knowledge.  I had no idea how I got here...so I had no idea how to fix it.

I quickly learned how to eat...and how terrible I had been eating.  I went to the doctor to get my blood pressure under control.  And I also joined my local YMCA.  That was the best decision I made.  I started walking in my neighborhood and slowly started jogging.  Eventually I started to run!  My sister even commented on how she thought she would never see me as a "runner".  Me too!  It was calming and it got me into shape, along with my better eating habits.

In less than a year, I accomplish my goal!  I lost over 25 lbs and I get myself into the best shape I have ever been as an adult.  I say that because I grew up in a gym.  As a former gymnast, I was a beast as a teenager.  I could do more push ups, pull ups and lift more weights than all the boys in my class.  I know this because my gym teacher, who also happened to be the football coach, makes me do this against all his football players.  This does not get me any dates in high school!

I finally start to enjoy myself.  I am at my ideal weight.  I start to enjoy working out and make a lot of gym buddies.  I even enter  a 5k run...every year.  I love shopping for clothes too, because everything fits.  I start to rub off onto my sisters.  They both start running!

So how did I end up here...now????  One day my husband comes home and asks me how I feel about moving back to Ohio.  What???  I have to leave sunny Virginia Beach.  The beach, the great schools, my gym buddies, my sister???  I knew it was the best thing to do but I did not want to go.  I was going kicking and screaming!  And that's pretty much how I left, but more like crying and exhausted.

After a year and a half of trying to sell our house, we finally make it to Ohio.  And within that time, it was really stressful.  I had concentrated on selling my house that I put everything on hold...except for running.  So slowly I put on a few pounds.  But nothing I couldn't get right back off.  That's what I told myself!

Eventually the running stops, the bad eating habits show up, there isn't a YMCA near my home and I start homeschooling.  I once again forget to take care of myself and find myself here....25 lbs heavier!  How does that even happen in 2 years???  I cry!  Reality stinks!

So now I look at myself and this long road I must go down.

I have to lose weight and I have to do it by myself.  I have to take that knowledge I learned when I joined the weight loss center and try to do it on my own.  I have the support of my husband, sisters and friends (hopefully). But my biggest motivator, to be accountable to someone, will not be there.  Other than myself.  I hope it's enough. So my journey begins....

With a single step, right???  And a plan.  I recently found a wonderful blogger and started reading her older posts.  Of course the one about her weight loss journey caught my eye.  I loved all her motivational pictures.  You can read her blog... Farmgirl paints here.  She has a simple "5" plan that I think I'll adopt.

The "5" Plan

5 days a week...sweat a lot!

5 times a day...eat!

5 meals a day will consist of...
lean protein, veggies, fruit, whole wheat grains and lowfat dairy/eggs.

And I have a sweet tooth, so a zone bar too.

I will also include 8 glasses of water!

But I think the key to my success must be action!  Just do it.  It's been so long since I've done anything...I need to just move and see where it takes me.

So here I am...

I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy bloggers and friends, asking them for their support.  ( I had to throw that Notting Hill quote in there).

Now the journey begins!

Columbus Ohio

I'm in Columbus this weekend with my family. My daughter has her first ballet competition tomorrow. She is very excited..and nervous. She is a beautiful dancer.

We just checked into the hotel. It's gorgeous. I love staying in hotels because they are so clean and clutter-free. The bed is huge and the decor is modern. It's a Hampton Inn!

2011-02-26_13-52-26_57.jpg

I only took one picture with my cell phone.  I wasn't sure I could get it onto my blog. It worked so I hope to have more pictures around town.

Then tomorrow it's off to the Dance competition.  It brings me back to my old gymnastic days.

Day 17 on My Organizing Challenge

I'm a bit behind in posting my daily challenge I'm taking from..

I was waiting to get pictures up but my camera is still not working.  If I could just find my charger. I know it's somewhere under some paperwork, buried on my (school) desk.  This is the reason I'm taking an organizing challenge!  Life would be easy if I knew where everything is at.

On to Day 17...the challenge is the mail station.

Since I don't have any pictures to share, I thought I would just share a few ideas.

1. Create a IN box...

I personally like to sort my mail in a pretty sorter.   I wait until the end of the day to deal with the bills, junk mail, magazines, and sometimes even a handwritten note from a friend..but mostly junk.

2. Have a place for magazines and catalogs...

Handy Magazine Rack

{ Crate & Barrel }

Floral Corrugated Magazine Files

{ the Container Store }

3. Create a file for bills, things to read and to file...

{ think geek }

4. Recycle and Shred unwanted papers...

{ Office Depot }

5. Set up a file system for bank statements, paid bills, medical and other important information...
I like to keep my papers in a binder. Look how pretty this one is.

All those pretty organizers live on top of my nice clean desk...challenge day 2!

Wouldn't you love to sort your mail here....
